And now I know why:
	$ svn status .sconf_temp/
	I      .sconf_temp
	$
So the .sconf_temp dir is set to be ignored from svn, but it contains
the conftest files which are necessary at build time. Now the scons
somehow remembers that it has already created the .sconf_temp files and
so crashes.

I have no idea where the scons cache is, ie where it remembers which
conftest files it has created, but can we delete this cache?
