I expect you get some traecback information in the shell you started
jppy from. What is it? Please create a ticket at
http://jppy.zanu.org.uk/trac/newticket

I'm away for a week now, but will look when I get back home.

Also you could try from a small python script, to help isolate just
that one problem. I expect it's something charset related.
